Cleaned up this side of the bed too, transplanted all that Japonica Kyoto grass (I think that’s what it is anyway) onto the bottom tier. Still looking for something to fill up the middle tier, preferably something colourful.
The area outside my front door had become an overgrown mess, so about a week ago I trimmed it all back, cleaned it up and planted some pansies for a little colour.
A little further down the ground cover had completely overgrown everything else, so I cut it back and with a little regular watering the ornamental grasses are starting to look really nice
The creeper on the wooden fence is called Evening Trumpet I think; it also needed to be cut back and guided through the fence, and is now starting to flower beautifully. It occurs to me that I have no idea what that white-tipped ground cover plant is called, will have to find out
So this is kinda where it started.
When I moved in here six years or so ago the collection of stumps you see in the picture was just a shrub. That shrub became a tree that grew rampantly, spreading out and pushing everything out of its way. It ruined the trees and plants around it, and killed the grass beneath it, although it did provide nice shade and privacy.
After many efforts at trying to control it, the tree had to go. The pic was taken three weeks after cutting it down, and as you can see it has started to flourish and grow already.
Next I planted grass. Three years ago heavy rains had flooded the garden and killed the grass, and the shady tree meant it never grew back. I put down gravel, which in hindsight was a terrible idea.
I’ve shoveled off the gravel and planted grass seed, but the stones got into the soil, and have risen to the top as I’ve been watering, so it still looks rather stony. I’m hoping once the grass has taken root better I can rake a lot of it off. The grass sprouted after about four days, and is a week old in the picture. The green fences are to keep my dogs from digging up the loose earth and ruining my attempts.
